The Last of Us Video Essay

Adaptation From Video Game to Television

TheLastOfUs_HBO_image

My thesis project is a preview of a video essay series on HBO's TV show adaptation of the 2013 game The Last of Us. The project covers a thorough comparative analysis of the prologue of the game and most of the show’s first episode, setting the stage for the rest of the series I plan to produce. Each of the show's episodes will be broken down individually, summarizing the game content, comparing scenes side-by-side, examining story changes, and evaluating how well they function in the new medium.

The episodic format analyzes each episode individually, providing deeper analysis than most existing comparisons. For gaming fans, it delivers an in-depth look at how well the show captures the spirit of the acclaimed game. By the end, it will all be condensed into one long-form video, also making it easy to consume in the background.

HERE IS THE VIDEO!

I always love me a good video essay, and with the adaptation of the game into a TV show, I am able to make my own video essay for a game whose story I enjoy. I appreciate video essays for their ability to analyze media and culture with compelling visuals and thoughtful narration, and with mine, I hope to accomplish just that. Scratching the Surface

My first video on The Last of Us featured here is the starting point for my project. It highlights the interactive storytelling features present in the game and how they were translated or left out in the show. It scratches the surface of what I have done for my thesis project in a much shorter form and with a sharper focus on the interactive storytelling aspect.
